Just thought i would put this out there that we will be having food at the races on Friday. There will be a small donation jar to help get aome monitors for the lap times and lineup to be displayed in the pit area. You don't have to be racing to enjoy the food. Come on down. I am going to smoke up some pork. I might add a little traction compound for that real race taste!

Nothing like the smell of traction compound in the morning.

Thanks for all that showed up last night and contributed towards the monitor project. On behalf of Brad, Terry, and Bob I thank you.
I had a number of people ask me what the projected cost of the extension cable and splitter will be. The two monitors we wish to start with have been donated and Ben is going to bring in a third that we may find a home for if we get enough for a 3-way splitter. As for the cost, the short aanswer is I don't know. The amount of money we get will determine the cost. If we raise 100 dollars, than I will buy the appropriate supplies that match the funds. If we only get 75 than we will get some cheaper cables.
I am a firm believer in transparency and last night we brought in 79 dollars. That is awesome! The should be enough to get some good cables and a nice powered splitter. The resolution doesn't need to be the highest as it will just be displaying the lap times and names but I do want to be able clearly read the displays.
That being said, I left the collection box out on the timing table if anyone wanted to add to the box in order to bump us up to a slightly higher quality cable/splitter combo. One that would allow us to add more monitors down the road.
I will leave the box out for a day or two longer.
Thanks again for your contributions!
-Todd

Brad and I put up some more shelves and two of the monitors last night in a temporary configuration. I plan on getting some supports made and having a more elegant screen solution in a few weeks or so. For now though the screens are in. Once I get the brackets made we will rearrange the pit lane again.
Thanks Randy and Brad (Hobbytown) for donating two of the monitors.
Nate mentioned he may have a line on some LCD monitors to use instead which would really clean up the install I think and look really nice. Keep an eye out for those in the future.
I think I want to move forward with the power project next. If you would like to contribute towards that project you can give any donations to Brad and let him know what they are for. I will not be at the racing tonight as I am giving my wife the night off. It was a busy summer with the band so she needs a Friday night with the girls!

What does the power project entail?

When Brad and I put up the monitors the other day my thoughts on power were confirmed; there isn't enough power drops on the extension cord. It is doable, you just have to bring a power strip and share.
What I envision fr this next step would be to run a conduit along the lower shelf with a duplex edision outlet every 3 feet or so. Cost is minimal as I have many of the supplies needed, just not all.
The supplies needed at this point would be some rubber coated flex conduit, surface mount outlet boxes and the coordinating strain reliefs.
I need to hit a home store to get some initial prices to see what it may cost.

Just a quick note, the VTA class discussions have gone rather well and it looks like it will be a strong class once everyone gets a car up and running. So far 5 people have stated they have begun putting a VTA car together.
The biggest challenge will be the people putting a car together on a budget and using used parts. The motor seems to be the hardest to come by as only Novak is making an approved VTA motor.
Here is a brief list of rules, the entire list of guidelines can be found here...http://www.rctech.net/forum/electric-road/198728-u-s-vintage-trans-am-racing.html
Motor - Novak Ballistic 25.5kV or SSPro 25.5kV
Esc - open NO ELECTRONIC TIMING ADVANCEMENT - this is different than national rules as their list is short.
Chasis - any 4x4 touring car chasis. Class was designed so that any car will work as well as others. Many people are finding old tc3 and such for incredible prices to use for a vta car.
Body - vintage pony/muscle car - check the official rules for specific part numbers. The car must be painted in a period specific color, have a number on the hood, both doors, and trunk lid.
Tires/wheels- The only tires allowed are HPI tire part #4793 front and #4797 rear, using stock tire inserts provided with tire and any HPI Vintage wheels designed to fit these tires. All other tires and/or part numbers are illegal. Five or Eight spoke wheels available in various colors. 0mm offset front wheels and 6mm offset rear wheels are intended for 26mm width fronts and 31mm width rear tires. 8-spoke Vintage wheels from #3805 through #3814, 5-spoke Vintage wheels from #3815 through #3822 and Vintage stock car wheels from #3854 through #3860, Vintage Wheel CC Type #33472 and #33473, Vintage Wheel DTP Type #33474 and #33475 are all legal wheels.
Battery - 2s lipo, 5000mah capacity max
5mm minimum ride height
minimum 1550g weight

VTA rules specify what motor is allowed. Currently the only motor allowed is the novak 25.5 motor. I know that you are a fan of brushed but this may be the excuse you are looking for to upgrade! It is a VERY restricted class as far as setup and equipment go. Ben and I also talked about limiting the FDR as many of the local tracks do to further equalize the competition. Right now, what I am advising people to do is follow the national rules if you want to run in this class. The rules can be found here. www.rctech.net/forum/electric-road/198728-u-s-vintage-trans-am-racing.html

The tamiya silver cans are slower than 25.5, or what about a 4 cell limit, just a thought i don't want to spend 180.00 for a motor setup just to run another class. others might not want to either just an option to keep it open for other local racers

VTA is a strict class nation wide. Everyone HAS to run the Novak 25.5. So that everyone IS the same speed.

Just an FYI, When VTA first came around, the motor rules were 27 turn stock with a 4 cell NIMH. Don't know how that will compare to 25.5 but something to look at!!

Don't know about the 27 turn motor. Bring it and see! You can always run in the misfit class as that is kinda a run what you brung class.
That is where the VTA will start out anyways until things get moving. For when it does kick in, the current USVTA rules will apply with the only exceptions being decided by Brad as it is his track. Currently these are the only local rule changes:
Open esc - must be in blinky mode or no electronic timing. No driver figure required
The rest of the rules apply. We have been speaking with Tim from the Hobbyplex in Omaha where they also run a VTA class and hey are interested in coming up for a visit which also means we may be traveling down there for a visit. At their tract the only esc/motor allowed are the Novak motors/escs so be aware in your planning. They also limit the FDR to 5.0. Something we may entertain. We may even limit the FDR to 6 as it is a smaller track.
Anyways, it is still a new class and we will get the kinks worked out but we will be following the rules as close as possible. The changes we made were to help get people in as a few interested parties have speed controls they wished to use rather than having to buy new one. Be warned though, you may not be able to run at other events/tracks with a non-conforming car.
Sorry for the long answer. In short, bring it. We'll never turn you away! As long as it isn't crazy fast to slow...it should be fun and fair, evenly matched competition. That is what the class is about!

Got the new LCD monitors installed this afternoon. Thanks again Nate for getting those! Make sure you also thank Metabank for them as well! Right now we have 3 monitors; two on pit lane and one at the North end of the track. Scott, I tried to find a balance in height for you and also to prevent unwanted fiddling from short peoples! let me know how it works for you. I know you are not one to make a big deal of things but it pained me to see you have to look up so high. The monitor adjusts easily for height so just put it at a comfortable height for you during race days. I am sure HT wont mind a bit, that is what I built it that way for. When the 4th monitor arrives we will most likely put it but the door to the office. My next project will be to tackle the power drops along pit lane. I need to come up with a clever widget for that. For those of you intending to run in the VTA class we will be limiting the FDR. Some experimenting is required but we are most likely going to go with something around a 6 or 7. The 6 was fine for the oval but one we end up with a road setup we will go with a smaller ratio. The oval will be setup for the month of October. With Luck we can start the VTA points season next month.
