At the meeting this week we discussed starting a slower class for the EDM type cars. We really want to see these type of classes grow, but understand watching the 10.5 EDM cars race last year, it can be quite intimidating to get into.
So a few ideas have been kicked around.
(1) Leave everything the same between the current EDM cars and start a class using 10.5 motors and a ONE cell lipo battery. The only difference in the cars is the battery. While this would created a slower division, it raises the issue of having a separate battery to power the receiver and that can have some safety issues. Also, the one cell lipo is used in no other classes around here, leaving the battery with little re-sale value and likely wouldn't work if that driver wanted to change classes.
(2) The second option would put 17.5 motors in the car (instead of 10.5) with two cell lipos (same as current class). Other than the motor, the other difference would be the ESC. The idea here is to use non-computer programmed ESCs. These are signigicatly slower than the hopped up programs currently used in the common Tekin or Castle Creation ESCs.
However, those computer controlled ESCs could be used, because they now have a "Spec Mode" - meaning they have no advantage over the non-computer programable ESCs. If we go this route, I'd encourage everyone to get the Tekin RS, because we could easily enforce that it is in Spec Mode ( a series of lights indicates this) and there are club members that would be more than willing to help a new person get the ESC into the proper mode.
Another advantage of this class is, with a Tekin, the driver would simply need to buy a new moter and they'd be ready to go in the "Current" EDM class.
What are your thoughts? Would you run this class?
We really want to get something like this going, so the classes can feed eachother. The most successful racing clubs and tracks all around the country have divisions that are similar, and drivers can move up through them with few changes.
